About Maxwell Marshall

Hi I'm Max :) I'm located in between Maine & Sri Lanka. I'm a photographic artist working with handmade Color Field Mandala prints. With these prints I unite the painterly 19th Century printing process, gum dichromate, and the experimental rayograph/photogram darkroom exposures of crystal glass.
I'm influenced by the palettes of India and the geometric colorists of the Bauhaus. I love creating new prints with old techniques. There's a timeless charm that comes from the sun kissed pastel strokes of a historical printing process.
Through experiments in these unique photographic practices, I feel like I've unearthed the artifacts of a massive archaeologic dig. These images feel both ancient and modern. They look good in every room I put them in. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
THE PROCESS
Each mandala begins with a photogram. I arrange objects — crystal glass bowls, geometric forms, natural materials — directly on light-sensitive paper in the darkroom and expose them to light. This creates the geometric foundation.
Then I hand-coat multiple layers of gum dichromate emulsion and expose each layer individually, building up color and depth. Each print takes 2-5 exposures over days or weeks.
Entirely analog. Entirely handmade. Just darkroom magic.
